Aquatic Therapy at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospitals

Whittier offers an Aquatic Therapy Program in two custom-designed, therapeutic, warm water pools. We offer individualized treatment programs and exercise instruction with licensed physical and occupational therapists specifically trained in aquatic therapy.

What is aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy is a form of rehabilitation that uses water’s properties to improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility. It is typically used in conjunction with a short-term rehabilitation or outpatient therapy program to help patients regain strength and mobility.

The treatment varies depending on the patient and may include strengthening, stretching, core stabilization, deep water traction, and balance activities. It is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of conditions, including:

Benefits of aquatic therapy

There are many benefits to aquatic therapy, including:

  • Reduced stress on joints: The buoyancy of water helps support your body weight, which can take pressure off your joints and make it easier to move and exercise without pain.
  • Increased blood flow: Water’s hydrostatic pressure can help improve circulation, which can increase blood flow to your muscles, which can help to improve healing and reduce pain.
  • Improved range of motion: The warmth of the water can help relax your muscles, improving your range of motion.
  • Increased strength: Aquatic therapy can help to strengthen your muscles safely and effectively.
